Tax enquiries are on the increase and HMRC’s income from compliance enquiries  rose to record levels in 2016-17. The increase amounted to £2.3 billion so you can see how seriously HMRC are taking tax compliance! What can you do to protect yourself?

  • Obviously, take care in preparing and filing your tax return, although many people we come across who arrive at our door because of an HMRC enquiry are unsure of what HMRC are questioning and need help to understand the issues
  • Using a professional to prepare and file your return will mean that you gain the benefit of expertise and experience to ensure things are right first time. HMRC may still raise an enquiry but you can be confident that their questions will be answered quickly and effectively.
  • If an enquiry does happen then consult a tax advisor immediately. They can then guide you through the process and explain what the issues are and how to argue your case with HMRC.
  • You can also protect yourself against the taxman by signing up to a fee protection scheme which covers you against the cost of professional fees in dealing with tax enquiries. We offer this to all our clients to provide them with peace of mind.
