If HMRC regularly leave you hanging on the phone then you are not alone. I have spent ages in the last few weeks trying to speak to one prticular department in HMRC which as far as I can see never answer the phone! So I have just written to them and hope I will get a reply in weeks rather than months. Last month the Government Public Accounts Committe dscribed HMRC’s record in answering phones as ‘abysmal’ and revealed that 20 million calls went unanswered in 2011-12. That’s out of a total 79 millions calls in the year. No at all great considering £900 million was spent on cutomer service by HMRC last year. They also blasted HMRC’s target of anwering 80% of calls within five minutes. Yes, that’s right five minutes! I don’t know of any business that would survive with that kind of service record.
