HMRC’s powers to find out details of taxpayers expenditure took another step forward from 1st September when they were given new powers to request data from the companies that process credit card payments. They will now be able to check through data of all credit and debit card payments over the past four years. They have given no information about how they will use this information but it seems likely that HMRC’s new powers will be used in investigations into taxpayer affairs.
