Following on the last blog with HMRC’s list of unbelievable excuses, here is their guidance on what they consider a reasonable excuse for a late tax return return:
A reasonable excuse is something that stopped you meeting a tax obligation that you took reasonable care to meet, for example:
You must send your return or payment as soon as possible after your reasonable excuse is resolved.
The following will not be accepted as a reasonable excuse:
We will be happy to advise on whether your circumstances will be considered to be a reasonable excuse for a late tax return and write an appropriate appeal letter.
